Is a Concrete Driveway a Good Fit for Arkansas Clay Soil?
A concrete driveway can work well on Arkansas clay soil, but only when the sub-base and reinforcement account for how much that soil expands and contracts with moisture. Concrete is rigid, so unlike pavers, it can't flex with minor ground movement — which means the base preparation, control joint spacing, and slab thickness all matter more for concrete than for almost any other hardscape surface.
We pour driveways at a thickness rated for vehicle load, over a compacted aggregate base, with steel reinforcement and control joints spaced to manage cracking as the concrete cures and the soil beneath it shifts seasonally. We also grade the driveway to shed water toward the street or a drain rather than toward your garage or foundation, since standing water against a slab edge is one of the fastest ways to undermine a concrete driveway's base.
Concrete driveways cost less upfront than pavers in most cases and offer a clean, uniform surface, though repairs typically mean patching or replacing a full section rather than lifting and resetting individual units the way you can with pavers.
How Often Should You Seal a Paver Driveway or Patio?
Most paver driveways and patios should be cleaned and resealed roughly every two to three years, though high-traffic driveways exposed to vehicle oil and de-icing salt may need it sooner. Sealing doesn't just add shine — a quality sealer locks polymeric sand in the joints in place, reduces weed growth between pavers, and helps prevent oil, tire marks, and mildew from staining the paver surface.
